BAND: Psychotic Reaction
Psychotic Reaction
Bio:
Psychotic Reaction was born in 1997 in the city of West Haven, adjacent to the great and well known New Haven, Connecticut. West Haven is known to locals for it's beaches and seafood restaurants. In the mid to late nineties it would also be known for it's punk, hardcore, ska and metal bands that were being put together by the youth of the city and beyond. With the resurgence of punk rock to the popular conscience of the 90's youth with bands like Green Day, Rancid, Nirvana, etc., a renewed interest in the genre began to develop. Dennis Reaction (b. Dennis Medina aka Hugh M.I. at the time) and Psychotic Robb (b. Robert Galus aka Rob B. at the time were high school friends who had common interests in music, in particular punk rock and guitar playing. After starting out in their early bands, Microwavable and Cosmo Vinyl, respectively, the two young punks decided to leave their respective bands and form an "old school" style punk rock band that was influenced, both in music and style, by bands of the early punk rock period (ie. Sex Pistols, Misfits, Ramones, Exploited, Clash, Replacements, etc) along with modern influences of the time (ie. Rancid, Bouncing Souls, Blanks 77, Casualties, etc.) Their goal was to get away from the more "poppier" style of punk rock that was popular at the time. They were looking for a sound that represented angrier, snotty, frustrating aspects of their lives at the time. The two young punks began to advertise looking for members to fill out the band...

Summer 1997, Dr.J (b. Jay Pernaselci) from Orange, Connecticut , saw an advertisement for a "punk rock band seeks bass player" at the local Strawberries record store. Dr. J, who's previous band, Chances R, broke up at the end of college, was looking to join a punk rock band. Playing bass since 1991, Dr.J decided to audition for this "punk band" out of "Waste Haven". After talking to the two young punks, Dr. J learned all the songs off the Sex Pistols "Never Mind The Bollocks.." album and went to the audition. Borrowing a bass amp from Dennis Reaction, the three began to belt out some Sex Pistols songs, then some Ramones songs then a song that Dennis Reaction wrote while he was in Microwavable called "I Hate You". Well things began to click. Everyone was into the "old school" sound/style and the band was beginning to take form. What was now needed was a name. In comes Psychotic Robb. Listening to the radion the previous day, Robb heard an old classic by a band called the Count Five. "Let's call the band Psychotic Reaction". Now that we had a name we needed a drummer.

Winter 1997, Dennis and Robb ask a friend from high school named Ace (b. James Conelly) to come down to the practice space and jam with the band. Ace, a West Haven native, played drums with Psychotic Robb in Cosmo Vinyl. Currently bandless, Ace decides to come on down. Not having a drum set of his own, the band scraped up some cash and bought a cheap drumset to audition Ace and other people for the drummer position of Psychotic Reaction. Ace, a fanatic about Green Day, was into punk rock, as well as, pop, rock, new wave and classic rock. Like Dr. J, Ace was older than Dennis and Robb and had more musical influences than just punk rock. These influences, along with Dr. J's would become essential in influencing the sound of Psychotic Reaction. The first audition of Ace was great. The band really clicked and Ace knew every Clash song off their first album. We played for hours over the coming weeks and decided we wanted Ace in the band. The first of many interpersonal problems with band members developed at this point. Ace, for whatever f**ked up reasons at the time, would not commit to being in the band. He did agree however to play with us - whatever?! The rest of Psychotic Reaction accepted this at the time for reasons of pure desperation and frustration. Dennis, Robb and Dr.J were itching to get out and begin to play shows. Their first opportunity came late in December 1997. A friend of Dennis and Robb, Sal from the band U Kill U, was having a party at the local Elks Club and had heard of the new punk band his friends had started. Sal wanted them to play. After talking (and a lot of convincing) with Ace, he was convinced to play this show. The guys had a couple of weeks til the show and practiced like hell to "get their shit together". On a Saturday, a week or two before Christmas 1997, Psychotic Reaction played their first show (under the name Itchy Nipples, a slick Dennis move). Playing covers by the Sex Pistols, Replacements, The Clash, Misfits, as well as, Psychotic Reaction originals "I Hate You" and "Party", show was the jumping off point for the band Psychotic Reaction.
