BAND: play pretty for baby
play pretty for baby
Bio:
Play Pretty for Baby nail your ass to the wall with leftist politics filtered through punk vitriol, rock swagger and fizzy Motown skronk. They?re tight, stylish, saucy and whip-smart?like an amalgamation of the Dischord roster, from which they steal liberally (Plays Pretty for Baby is a Nation of Ulysses album name). With a powder keg live show and an equally explosive self-titled EP, Play Pretty for Baby are one of a small handful of local bands who manage to pull politics into the mix without coming off like hectoring blowhards. "We never wanted to be an overtly political band. No one?s preaching. If anything, we?re just about ?let?s not kill people we don?t know for no reason,?" says guitarist Brian Murray. Well, he?s no fun! -Alison M. Rosen, OC Weekly "28 Local Greats"

The bottom line of this review comes right at the top: Play Pretty For Baby is the best fucking band I've seen in years and if there ?s one band more people should know about, it ?s them. They defy straight categorization by presenting post-punk without the pretension and mixing it with equal parts danceable pop and skull-crushing hardcore. I know it doesn?t sound like it would work, but trust me it does. Their set caused people to actually unfold their arms and step in towards the stage, unconsciously drawn in by the sound and the spectacle. Play Pretty For Baby can't be summed up easily, but they have mastered the art of rock without neglecting the art of roll and they are as urgent and intense as it gets without sacrificing dynamics or musicianship. They are that something real we?ve all been searching for since the mid 80's and, given the right amount of exposure, they are poised to do nothing less than change the entire musical landscape. Go see their next show; I swear on my soul you will not be sorry. -Jeff Penalty, SKRATCH Magazine

This band is quite a step up from the run-of-the-mill punk band. They have originality in a world of followers. With some mind-bending lyrics, blaring guitars, and plenty of head-ripping drum fills, it gave me a new outlook on the future of punk, my brothers and sisters. I can feel a revolution coming on. Be a part of it, and join the collaboration of Play Pretty for Baby. Can I get an Amen? -Ian Wilkins, SKRATCH magazine
