BAND: Project Mayhem
Project Mayhem
Bio:
PM NEWS

26/07/2007

It's the tangible strength of character that puts PM a cut above the rest. And while Hugh Drockstar cruises the Mediterranean on a luxury motor-yacht a la Greg Norman, Jesse Deviant is shopping around for sports cars. Meanwhile, Bangers has been dispatched to find the New Sound, and latest reports indicate that he has discovered a village populated entirely by women! Benny Mayhem is currently Of No Fixed Address and has been seen wandering the metropolitan area "looking intense". What will become of our intrepid adventurers? Stay tuned for the next episode of Mayhem News.

THE BAND SAYS:

Allow me to set the scene. It is the year 2007. Seven years into the tumultuous decade that kicked off our new millennium with a weird Orwellian bang. A time of fear and paranoia. War and control. Impending Armageddon? Near-total employment. In Perth, Western Australia, some still chase the Australian dream: a nice quiet house close to a school in a white-bread suburb, somewhere they can visit when they’re not working the mines. Blind consumerism and bland mediocrity…

But in the city, in the back-alleys sharehouses and nightclubs lives a different kind of escapism—sure-fire hedonism, The Simpsons generation with a bottle of Jack Daniels and nothing to lose. Good people on the wild rollercoaster, dealing with the heartless reality of John Howard’s Australia by leaving it all behind... at least ‘till Monday. This is the world in which four* intrepid adventurers found themselves. Four middle class white boys, armed with little more than sheer talent, determination, and a whole fuckload of luck.

Project Mayhem: four rock’n’roll visionaries on a quest.
The result: No Rest For The Wicked.

The title says it all; no matter how you interpret it. Here is a snapshot of life in the seedy underbelly of Western Australia. A document of a time and place; a full-throttle punk rock Gonzo trip through the decadent desiccated swampland, all sludge fuzz bass and stoned grooves… guitars ringing with soul and aggression while a modern-day rock’n’roll poet spits a demented sermon at lightening speeds.

No Rest For The Wicked tells it like it is, drawing influence from the sights and sounds of the place it was written and recorded. The people and events, the bands and the fans; lost weekends, the highs and the lows of life in the rock’n’roll business in a parochial town on the edge of the desert where the nearest discernable civilisation is literally thousands of kilometres away.

Subversive, honest, self-aware, and completely insane; Project Mayhem are the spokesmen for a generation. So round up the most entertaining characters you know, bust out bulk quantities of your favourite poison, and hold on to your couch for dear life for there is nothing in the world quite like the Project Mayhem Rock’n’Roll Experience.

*5 if you include Cormac

AND THE PRESS SAY:

[Project Mayhem's] songs are catchier than bird flu at a Taiwanese cock-fight.
- X-Press Magazine, 28 Feb '07

Project Mayhem's CD is the most fun you can have with your pants on, but if you enjoy it as much as I do, those pants will come RIGHT OFF! It's your comprehensive guide to rock and roll, if you don't dig it.. then I officially sanction your death. It's safe to say, if your ears aren't painted on... you'll love Project Mayhem. 4 3/4 out of 5.
- Laith Tyranny, Fear Of Comedy

In terms of rock music fuelled by a big punk attitude (think The Saints, The Ramones), Project Mayhem are the shit. Lead by Benny Mayhem, one of the most animated and charismatic frontmen you're likely to see around the traps, the boys impressed with their playing talents, their ability to write some fucking catchy tunes and their salute to the three essentials - beer, drugs and rock 'n' roll. I’m sure the event sponsors Drug Aware and Healthway were proud.
- Steph Edwardes, Rockus Online Magazine.

...Project Mayhem also have a large knowledge and love of Perth bands past and present as well, and it makes them part of a similar legacy. Understanding that simple songs should be catchy, Project Mayhem's take on pop is merely to rough it up, not to break its rules, which makes them a very effective band. Frontman Ben Watson seemed more nervous (or at least less energetic) than usual, but guitarist Hugh filled in the space by putting his whole body into his playing. There's no two ways about it; the guy takes on the role of guitar hero like a fish to water. If there was a category for 'songwriting' on the NBT judging sheets, then this band would have surely placed higher.
