Nellie Bly-
Nellie Bly was born on May 5, 1864 with her real name Elizabeth Jane Cochran. Nellie focused her attention on women's rights issues. She was the first person to come up with investigative reporting. She was an expert at under cover work. As her first under cover work she dressed as a poor sweatshop worker and showed how bad the conditions actually were. On November 14, 1889, Nellie started her journey to travel around the world in 80 days, she succeed by traveling the world in 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minuets, and 14 seconds. In 1914 she went to England to escape her financial problems for a few weeks. On January 27, 1922, Nellie Bly died.

First amendment- it plays a role by the in the first amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” so people who live in a country where there is a law about what religion you have to be decide to move here because they don’t want to be of that religion anymore. The amendment also states “freedom of speech or of the press” which means that we may state our opinion in the newspaper or say it out loud without getting in trouble. We may say inappropriate things or stupid things but we have the right to say it. That is how the first amendment plays a role in today’s society.

Some of the most important things that I learned in journalism are all the things that you taught us, without the things you taught us we would not have the knowledge to be journalist. Some of examples are all the vocabulary that we did in class; I didn’t know what any of them meant except plagiarism and muckrakers. Another thing was the interviews. If I didn’t learn how to interview someone I would be asking them how they were and ask them “yes” or “no” questions instead of open ended questions. I feel if I had a couple more years of journalism I would be a very good journalist.

Global Warming

Global Warming is a big issue that is being talked about a lot these days. Almost everyone knows what it is, but whether they chose to believe it or not is a whole other story. It is still unknown as to what the exact cause of global warming is, but there are many theories out there. The most commonly believed theory is the Greenhouse Gas Emission theory. This theory states that we have basically caused global warming with all of our emissions.

The greenhouse effect is unquestionably real and helps make the temperature of our planet regular and normal. It is necessary for life on Earth and is one of the Earth's natural cycles. It is the result of heat absorption by certain gases in the atmosphere (called greenhouse gases because they effectively trap the heat in the lower atmosphere) and re-radiation downward of some of that heat. Water vapor is the most common greenhouse gas, followed by carbon dioxide and other more scarce gases. Without a natural greenhouse effect, the temperature of the Earth would be about zero degrees F (-18°C) instead of its present 57°F (14°C). So, the concern is not with the fact that we have a greenhouse effect, but whether human activities are leading to an increase of the greenhouse effect by the emission of greenhouse gases through fossil fuel combustion and deforestation.
Opinions vary on what we should do about the greenhouse effect, but most agree that it is indeed real, and that we are indeed increasing it.
Human activity has been increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (mostly carbodioxide from the use of coal, oil, and gas; plus a few other less-common gases). There is no scientific debate on this point. Pre-industrial levels of carbon dioxide (this was before the start of the Industrial Revolution) were about 280 parts per million by volume, and the levels that we have right now are greater than 380 parts per million and increasing at a rate of 1.9 parts per million since 2000. The amountf CO2 emissions in our atmosphere today is much higher than the natural range over the last 650,000 years of 180 to 300 parts per million. According to the Governments' Special Report on Emission Scenarios , by the end of the 21st century, we could expect to see carbon dioxide concentrations of anywhere from 490 to 1260 parts per million. That is about 75% above the normal concentration.
So now that we know the facts and the hard numbers, what can we do to try and fix this problem? Everyone has heard of "going green", and I think that it is time to start doing that. We need to cut down on the activites that are making the our life and the Earth's life unhealthy. We need to save energy, water, and every other resource that we have.

Recent studies have just showed that the carbon footprint of even the best conserving Americans is still double that of the Global average. This research was conducted by an MIT class who researched every Americans' lifestyle, ranging from: the homeless, multi-millionaires, Buddhist monks, and everyone in between. The bottom line of this research is that the United States produces more than double the average amount of emissions. The class studied the carbon emissions of Americans in a wide variety of lifestyles and compared them to those of other nations. And those emissions rise steeply from that minimum as people's income increases.

The students conducted detailed interviews or made detailed estimates of the energy usage of 18 lifestyles, spanning from a vegetarian college student and a 5 year old up to the super rich-Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. The average annual carbon dioxide emissions per person, they found, was 20 metric tons, compared to a world average of four tons. But the low, which nobody in the U.S. can reach, no matter a person's energy choices, turned out to be 8 and a-half tons, the class found. That was the emissions calculated for a homeless person who ate in soup kitchens and slept in homeless shelters.
A different cause for our Carbon Footprint that was looked at by the class was "The Rebound Effect", which is an often over-looked factor. For example, if someone were to buy a Hybrid car instead of one that uses a lot of gas, they would save a bunch of money. But it is where the saved money actually goes that causes the rebound effect. If the person were to go on a vacation, and travel by airplane with the leftover Hybrid money, they would actually be contributing more carbon emissions then they would normally.

After I read this article, I decided to try conducting a study that was similar to this at Dowling Catholic High School. I interviewed 4 people, and asked them about their lifestyle and their Carbon footprint, and whether or not they would be willing to give up their current lifestyles to help save the planet. The answer that I got most of the time was no. Americans don’t want to seem to give up their lifestyle, even though it may seriously be damaging our planet. The effects just seem unreal. I personally would probably not give up my lifestyle, because I am a little lazy and I have a different viewpoint. I don’t see how one person giving up their lifestyle could make a difference, and I feel that many Americans have the same lazy opinion. Unless there was a law passed, or a major movement of Americans giving up their lifestyles, I probably would not give up mine.
