The media will always skew the situation in order to get a rise out of people. If they get you hooked on a supposed "story" you will more than likely continue to watch their program to be updated. Honestly, all I can say is do the research for yourself and make your own decision. America is making strides in the fascist direction, prompted in some degree by the Religious Right, but by many other conservative groups as well.
To answer your question though, is it as bad as they portray it? Nah.
