Scene VII: Sara
Scene VII: Sara
Ashley is sitting on the couch, watching TV. Jack rushes into the room, slipping on the floor and falling on his back. Ashley jumps at the noise, and turns around, then stands up and looks at Jack’s fallen figure on the floor.
Ashley: You okay?
She reaches out he hand to him and he grabs a hold and pulls himself up. Bends over a little, and tries to catch his breath.
Jack (breathlessly): Yeah… uh… I’m all right….
Ashley: What the Hell happened, Jack? You look terrible.
Jack: To…tell the truth… I don’t really… know what the Hell… just happened.
Ashley: By the looks of your expression, whatever the Hell it was just scared the shit out of you.
Jack glares up at her. Ashley is a little taken aback by his expression, the falters a little.
Ashley: I’m sorry…
Jack straightens up, holds her arms, and then gently kisses her.
Jack: It’s all right.
Jack’s cell phone rings, and he looks up at the clock as he flips it open.
Jack: Hello? …I’m at Ashley’s house…. my girlfriend… not too long ago… really? … That’s wonderful, Jared… okay, I’ll be right there… eurgh… whatever…later.
Jack hangs up the phone and sighs. He looks at Ashley.
Jack: Sorry, but that was my roommate. Our friend got banged up in a skateboarding incident. Apparently, his arm is broken in four places and his bone is massacred out of his skin. Pretty gnarly shit, eh? Well, sorry, but I have to go down to the hospital and see him. So, uh… I’ll call you or something. Later.
Jack pulls on his jacket and starts to head out the door. He freezes as he spots a picture on the foyer room table. He points a shaking finger at it.
Jack: Who is this?
Ashley looks at him and walks in to see what picture he was staring at. It was of Sara sitting on the hood of her new car.
Ashley: That’s my sister. Why?
Jack: She looks really familiar to me….
Ashley: She passed away almost six years ago.
Jack looks at her with his mouth slightly open.
Jack: Six years? What happened to her?
Ashley: She got in a car crash while she was driving back with her boyfriend from some concert she went to on her birthday. They had been binge drinking, and someone hit them. My sister was killed on impact, but Matt died about 4 or 5 hours after the crash.
Jack looks back at the picture.
Jack: Hmm… how old was she?
Ashley: Seventeen.
Jack: Seventeen…
Ashley: Too young to die…
Jack (offhandedly): Yes…
Jack turned, finally tearing his eyes from the picture. Still distracted, he kisses Ashley and walked out the door. Ashley shut it behind him and then turned back to the picture, biting her lip. She picks up the picture and sighs.
Ashley: Hey Sara.
Ashley looks away from the framed picture as the phone rings. She walks into the kitchen and grabs the phone off the wall.
Ashley: Hello?
As before, there is a man’s deep breathing on the other end. Ashley’s eyes widen.
Ashley: Okay, I don’t know who the Hell you are, but why the Hell do you keep calling?
The man’s breathing is heavier than before, and pauses after a breath, as though he is trying to regain his composure. Over his breath, his voice can be slightly heard.
Man: Stay… away… from… him….
Ashley’s eyes widen suddenly; she begins to tremble violently.
Ashley (frightened): What?
The man coughs violently; a wracking cough that Ashley was sure would bring blood.
Man: Get… away…. Save yourself… while…you can…
Ashley: Get away? … From what?
The line goes dead, but not before the man could struggle out one last word.
Man: Him…

Scene 6
Scene VI: The Next Day
Jack awakens lying on Ashley’s couch. He is in a sitting position, his back resting against the arm of the couch. His legs are propped up on a pillow on the other end of the couch, and Ashley is in his arms, lying on his left. He opens his eyes, and looks down at her. She opens her eyes at his glance.
Jack: Light sleeper, are you?
Ashley (giggles sleepily): Yeah.
Jack (yawns): Got any coffee, energy drinks, anything like that?
Ashley: Not a morning person either, eh? Well, yea, I have some Rockstars in the fridge if you want one.
Jack gets up off the couch, holding Ashley’s hand until it was out of reach. He sighs, the opens the refrigerator door, looking for a Rockstar. He pulls one out, and then turns around, closing the door with his foot, simultaneously opening the can, and just as he does, the phone rings. He freezes, and then looks at Ashley.
Ashley (sitting up): Should we answer it?
Jack doesn’t answer, he just walks over and picks up the telephone.
Jack (shakily): Hello?
Leah: …Jack? What the Hell are you doing at Ashley’s house?
Jack: Oh, Leah. I stayed the night because of the heavy rain.
Leah: Mmhmm… sure. Well, is Ashley awake?
Jack: Yeah, here.
Jack walks to Ashley and hands her the phone.
Ashley: Hello?
Leah: Just what the fuck…are you doing to Jack?!
Ashley (giggles): Nothing! He stayed over, and we watched some TV and fell asleep!
Leah: Yea, mmhmm… whatev. Call me when he leaves, and tell me all about this… “sleep.”
Ashley: We didn’t do anything.
Leah: Whatev, late.
Ashley: Later.
Ashley hangs up the phone and walks into the kitchen with Jack. She pulls out a Rockstar and sits down at the table where Jack is. He turns and looks at her.
Jack: Do you get the morning paper?
Ashley: You never struck me as one who reads the paper.
Jack: Do you always wonder that when you meet someone new?
Ashley (laughs a little): Totally. Hang on a sec, and I’ll get it.
Ashley walks outside to get the paper. Camera zooms in on Jack, who smiles to himself. He takes a drink of his Rockstar, stares at the blank countertop. He sighs, and leans back in his chair and stretches. A newspaper flies through the air from left screen and hits him square in the chest, catching him by surprise and he has to grab hold of the table to keep from falling. Ashley walks into screen.
Ashley (walking into frame): Happy now?
Jack picks the paper up from his lap.
Jack (sarcastically, raises on eyebrow): Quite. Did you enjoy that hot-blooded impulse to hit my in the chest with flying lies?
Ashley: Hell’s fucking yea!!
Jack laughs and opens the paper. He scans the front page, and then shuts it, disgusted.
Jack: I told you it was lies.
He stands up and talks in a very loud, emphasized voice.
Jack: Lies, all Lies!!
He puts his elbows on the table and covers his eyes in his hands, and pretends to cry, screaming in a very whiny voice.
Jack: Oh, God! How could they lie to me! Oh, God!
He continues to scream like an idiot as Ashley cracks up on the corner. She walks over to him and pats him on the back, still laughing.
Ashley: It’s alright, kiddo. It’ll be A-O.K. someday.
Jack starts laughing, the turns his head to look at Ashley. He straightens up after a second, and then kisses her. He walks away down a hall and disappears, camera focuses again on Ashley, who smiles and shakes her head. Screen cuts to Jack who is washing his hands in the bathroom. The camera is behind him, he turns off the water, and he leans forward to grab a towel to dry his hands. He glances up, and in the mirror is the reflection of seventeen-year-old Sarah. Camera cuts to his left. Jack panics, and spins around quickly, gripping the counter behind him with both hands, a terrified look on his face. Camera cuts to the doorway for a moment, and there is nothing there. Camera cuts back to Jack’s left.
Jack (In disbelief): Holy mother fuckin shit goddamn pissfuckin son of a bitch!! What in goddamn hell was that?
He lingers in the bathroom for a moment, disbelief on his face, and then walks out the door at a fast pace.

Scene 5
Scene V: A Strange Caller
An awkward silence passes between them.
Jack: (sighs nervously) do you want to watch TV?
Ashley: (shrugs) if you want to.
Jack: Okay.
Instead of grabbing the remote, Jack just sits there. He glances nervously at Ashley, opening his mouth as though to say something, but changes his mind, and closes his mouth again. Ashley sits there, her elbow on the arm of the couch, her head on her closed fist, staring at the floor. Jack sits back and sighs heavily.
Jack: Well, you want to just…talk?
Ashley looks back at him, a half-smile across her face.
Ashley: What did you have in mind to talk about?
Jack: …You know…stuff people…talk about…like…puppi es, and…food…. Stuff like that…
Ashley leans back, so she is relaxed completely on the couch. She looks at Jack for a moment, and then busts out laughing. Jack looks at her, and cannot help but to smile. He even laughs a little. Then, at this point feeling rather confused, he has nothing to say except-
Jack: What?
Ashley (still laughing): Puppies. We had a great convo going there, and then after one silence, the best you can come up with is puppies. What the Hell?
Ashley starts laughing again.
Jack: …It’s a hot topic!
She laughs even harder. Jack has nothing to say, so he laughs too, but not as hard as she was laughing. In the midst of their laughter, the phone rings. Ashley stops laughing, but continues to smile as she stands up to answer the phone.
Ashley: Hello? …Hello? …Fuck.
She hangs up the phone. Jack looks at her, one eyebrow raised as she sat back down.
Jack: Who was that?
Ashley: No one answered.
The phone rang again, so Ashley got up to answer it again.
Ashley: Mother fucker…
She picks up the phone.
Ashley (somewhat agitated): Hello?
This time, you can hear a man’s heavy breathing on the phone. Ashley’s expression becomes a little frightened.
Ashley: Hello? …Hey asshole, say something…. All right, you fucking jackass, I’m hanging up.
Ashley hung up the phone. This time, she did not return to her seat next to Jack. She laid the phone on the table and moved her hands behind her head. Jack sat there for a moment, then got up and stood beside her.
Jack: Who was it?
Ashley: Some pervert calling during his orgasm.
The phone rang again. Jack beat her shaking hand to the phone. He hit the talk button.
Jack: Hello?
Again, heavy breathing. Jack’s face adorned the same expression as Ashley’s.
Jack: Oi, fuck-tard, say something…. Hey!
Jack hung up the phone, with a very concerned expression on his face. Then, he picked up the phone and dialed #69. He put the phone to his ear, listening for the phone operator to say the phone number of the last call. He did a little stupid dance while listening for the number. When it said the number, he said it aloud.
Jack: 548-4845.
He hung up the phone, and then dialed the number. He put it on speaker. It didn’t ring.
Phone Operator: The number you have dialed has been disconnected.
Jack hung up the phone, even more concerned. He held it in his hand, and then looked at Ashley, mouth slightly open. The phone rang again. Jack answered the phone, and said nothing. The deep breathing continued. He put it on speaker so Ashley could hear it for a second, and then hung up again.
Jack: That what you heard?
Ashley: Exactly.
Jack: there are some creepy sons of bitches out there, eh?
Ashley: Yeah…
A small moment of silence passes between them. The phone ringing again cuts the silence.
Jack: Persistent assholes… (Hits the talk button) Hello?
The breathing continues on the phone. Jack snarls and sighs angrily.
Jack: Hey asshole, are you gonna say something or just be a prick?
Instead of the breathing continuing, the man laughs eerily.
Jack: Hey ass fuck, say something!
The man just laughs again. Jack hangs up. He hits the talk button again and calls 9-1-1.
9-1-1 Operator: Hello, 9-1-1, what’s your emergency?
Jack: There has been some freak-ass mother fucker calling my friend and I and we need some help.
9-1-1 Operator: Okay here’s what you need to-

Scene 4
Scene IV: Jack
Camera cuts to Jack pulling up to Ashley’s house. The rain is pouring outside now, really loudly. Jack stops in front of Ashley’s house, she looks away from the window at Jack.
Ashley: Thank you for the ride. If you don’t mind the rain, would you like to come in?
Jack (smiles): Sure.
Ashley smiles at him, and then opens the car door. Jack pulls the keys out of the ignition, and then steps out of the car himself. His car door slams, then camera cuts. Rolling begins as they are inside Ashley’s house.
Ashley: Welcome…would you like a drink?
Jack: Depends. Is it alcoholic?
Ashley: I don’t drink alcohol, so you won’t find any in my house at all, that’s a promise.
Jack: Don’t drink? You’re lucky I’m not an alcoholic, or I’d be pissed. I drink scotch, occasionally, but I’m not a drunk. I was thinking maybe if you have Sprite…?
Ashley: Sprite your favorite?
Jack: Yep, how’d you guess?
Ashley: Gut feeling…. (laughs) You ordered Sprite at the restaurant, too.
Jack: Oh… (Playfully) stalker…
Ashley: What?
Ashley hits Jack playfully. They both laugh and continue to make jokes. Later on, after it’s well dark outside, and raining like a hurricane, Jack finally looks at his watch.
Jack: Whoa, shit, it’s already eleven o’clock!
Ashley scoots closer to him on the couch, and looks at his watch.
Ashley: Wow, it is…
Jack: Man, I’m going have to drive home in that rain…
Ashley bites her lip, an idea coming to her. She looks shyly at Jack.
Ashley: You can stay here until the rain lets up…if you want.
Jack looks at Ashley as though he’d been waiting for her to say this all night.
Jack: Can I really?
Ashley: Sure, if you want to.
Jack: Okay, I take it I’ll have to sleep on this here comfy couch? (Pats the couch cushion next to him)
Ashley looks crestfallen.
Ashley: Yeah, I suppose.
Jack (a little confused): Okay, then. Do you want to go to sleep now?
Ashley: You can, but I have to stay up…well, I’m an insomniac, so have no particular interest in going to sleep now.
Jack: Oh, I’m sorry.
Ashley: It’s okay.

Scene 3
Scene III: A Chance Meeting
Ashley is now in the bookstore. She is reading the back of a book, when a girl sneaks up behind her and tickles her. Ashley jumps, and whirls around.
Ashley: Leah!!
Leah: (giggles) Hey girl! Surprise!
Ashley: What’re you doing here?
Leah: (raises eyebrow) Are you not happy to see me?
Ashley: Did I say that? I just thought you weren’t going to be here.
Leah: Yeah, well, I changed my mind.
Ashley: So where’s everybody else?
Leah: Around. They’re probably at the bar. But I just decided to drop by here and see you.
Ashley: Okay, well, thank you, Leah.
Leah: Yeah, well, there was something I was supposed to tell you, but I don’t remember it now…
Leah’s voice trails off, and here expression turns to surprise, then excitement. She let out a quiet shriek, and she walk over toward a young man in a Harry Potter t-shirt.
Leah: Hey Jack, I thought you weren’t going to be here?
Jack turns, surprised at the familiar voice.
Jack: Wha…?
Leah: I thought you left town? And you are in a bookshop?
Jack: C’mon, this is kind of embarrassing for me.
Leah: Embarrassing how?
Jack: It just is, okay?
Leah: Hey Ash, come here!
Ashley walked toward the two.
Ashley: What’s up?
Leah: Ashley, this is Jack. Jack, Ashley.
Ashley and Jack shake hands.
Leah: Okay, now that we’re all acquainted with each other, how’ve we all been doing?
Ashley: Not bad. Been, bored, mostly.
Jack: Same, but with heavy emphasis on boredom, heh. I dig your shirt, by the way.
Ashley (smiles): Thanks. Well, I’m going to go and see if they have the new book in the series I’m reading. I’ll be back. Late.
Leah: All right, later.
Ashley walks away toward a section in a faraway corner. The camera focuses on her, as she scans the wall for the book.
Ashley: Hmm…not in yet, I guess.
She lingers for a minute, searching for any other book that looks interesting. Then after a faulty search, she returns to Jack and Leah.
Ashley: Not there yet.
Leah (sarcastically): Whoa, what a huge loss to society!
Ashley: Hardy fucking har. Well, whatever. Do you two want to come hang out with me somewhere?
Leah: Where, the University of St. Boredom? It’s probably better than this dump.
Jack: Bookstores aren’t so bad. They’re quiet.
Leah: Ooo, wow, such a point, Jack.
Ashley: Don’t be so mean, Leah. Well, I was thinking out to eat or something.
Jack: Sure, I’ll go with you.
Leah: I’ve got plans with Aaron. You guys go and…get acquainted with each other.
Ashley: I know what you’re thinking, and no, I just met the guy.
The three of them laugh. Fade to black.
The film rolls into a simple restaurant. Ashley and Jack are sitting at a table, ordering.
Waitress: Okay, your orders will be right out!
The waitress walks away into the restaurant’s kitchen. Jack shifts nervously. Ashley props her elbows up on the table and folds her hands.
Ashley: Okay, Jack. What’re you into?
Jack: Um…Well, I’m a stuntman, I’m really into movies and stuff…and my favorite band is Pink Floyd.
Ashley: A stuntman, huh? Sounds exciting. Tell me about it.
Jack: Tell you about it? Well, there’s not much to tell. I’m just a simple stuntman.
Ashley: I never thought stuntmen were what you’d call “simple,” but if it helps you sleep at night…
They laugh, enjoying themselves. The waitress returns with their drinks, sets them down on the table, then walks away.
Jack: Well, Ashley, I do believe it’s your turn to tell me about yourself.
Ashley: What do you want to know?
Jack: Everything. What’s your last name?
Ashley (raises an eyebrow): Interesting question. It’s Monroe. Yours?
Jack: Well, Miz Monroe, I’m Jack Means. What’s your all-time favorite band?
Ashley: Silverstein, no question. Best band there is.
Jack: Except for Pink Floyd.
Ashley: Want to run that by me again?
They both laugh again, really becoming fond of each other. Jack takes a drink of his soda then looks back at Ashley.
Jack: Where do you live?
Ashley: In a house.
Jack (tilts his head slightly): No kidding?
Ashley (laughs, raises both hands): Dead serious!
Jack: Oh, really? (laughing)
Ashley: I live up on Rosewood Drive, so I can walk from there to the bookshop.
Jack: And you can walk to this restaurant.
Ashley: Yep. Sometimes its good to be a geek.
Jack: I don’t think you’re a geek.
Ashley: Look who’s talking.
Jack: (sarcastic laugh)
Ashley glances out the window, it is beginning to rain, just as the weatherman promised. Ashley realizes she didn’t bring her car.
Ashley: So, I get to walk home tonight…
Jack follows her gaze out the window, realizing what she meant.
Jack: I can give you a ride home, if you want.
Ashley flashes him a thankful smile.
Ashley: Thank you, if it’s not too much trouble.
Jack: No trouble at all.
Ashley: Thanks.
